Description
Cascara (also known as coffee cherry tea or coffee husk tea) refers to the dried outer skin (husk or peel) of the coffee cherry fruit, which is naturally processed and separated from the coffee bean during production. It is brewed as a tisane (herbal infusion) with a fruity, sweet flavor often described as having notes of hibiscus, cherry, raisin, or tobacco—quite different from coffee itself.
Key health benefits of cascara from naturally processed coffee skins include:
- Rich in antioxidants — Cascara is high in polyphenols, chlorogenic acid, and other phenolic compounds that help combat oxidative stress, neutralize free radicals, and reduce inflammation. These may contribute to protection against chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative conditions when consumed as part of a polyphenol-rich diet.
- Brain health support → Extracts from coffee fruit (including cascara) have been linked to increased levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports cognitive function, memory, mood, and neuroprotection. A small human study showed significant BDNF increases, though larger trials are needed.
- Mild energy boost → It contains low caffeine (typically 20-30mg per cup, similar to green tea and about a quarter of brewed coffee), providing gentle stimulation without strong jitters.
- Potential digestive and metabolic benefits → The natural fiber may act as a prebiotic to support gut health and regularity. Some sources suggest it could aid metabolism, blood sugar regulation, and fat loss due to compounds like chlorogenic acid, though evidence is preliminary.
- Immune and overall wellness → High antioxidant levels may bolster immune function and offer anti-inflammatory effects.
Note that while cascara is promoted as a superfood with higher antioxidant capacity than many fruits (e.g., claims of more than blueberries), much of the evidence comes from small studies or coffee fruit extracts rather than the brewed tea specifically. Benefits are promising but not conclusively proven for large-scale health claims.
Importantly, this is not cascara sagrada (a laxative from buckthorn bark)—they are entirely different and should not be confused.
Cascara is also sustainable, repurposing what was once coffee production waste. Enjoy it hot or cold-brewed for a refreshing, low-caffeine alternative!
