How to Plant Soursop Seeds:
- Environment: Soursop trees prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Avoid planting soursop trees in areas prone to frost, as they are sensitive to cold temperatures.
- Sowing: Fill a seed tray or small container with a well-draining seed-starting mix. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and cover with light soil. Keep the soil moist but not wet and place the tray in a warm, sunny spot.
- Transplanting: Once the seedlings have two sets of true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted into individual pots or directly into the garden. Choose a location that receives full sun and has well-drained soil. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball, place the seedling carefully, refill with soil, and water thoroughly.
- Watering: Soursop trees require regular watering, especially during dry and hot periods. Aim to provide 1-2 inches of water per week, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize the soursop tree every 2-3 months during the growing season using a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing as it can damage roots and negatively impact fruit production.
- Pruning: Pruning helps maintain the tree’s shape, improves air circulation, and encourages new growth. Prune in late winter or early spring, removing dead, diseased, or damaged branches.
- Pest Control: If you notice pests or diseases, treat them immediately using organic or low-toxicity methods.
- Harvesting: Soursop fruit is ready to harvest when it changes color from green to yellowish-green and the skin becomes slightly soft when pressed. Cut the fruit from the tree with a sharp knife, leaving a short stem attached. Soursop fruit can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
