Nutrition, Traditional Use and Research

The statements below describe nutrition facts, traditional use and published research. They are not health claims for our products.

  • Sesame seeds are a source of unsaturated fats, protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium and copper. Calcium and magnesium contribute to the maintenance of normal bones, and copper contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Sesame seeds are used in cooking and baking and for oil.
  • Sesame oil is traditionally used in Asia and in Ayurveda for cooking and for massage and skin care. It is a traditional moisturizing oil; there is no sufficient scientific proof for effects beyond moisturizing.
  • Sesame seeds contain lignans such as sesamin, which show antioxidant activity in laboratory tests. These are test-tube and animal findings, and no health effect in people can be concluded from them.
  • Please note that sesame is a common food allergen. People with a sesame allergy must avoid sesame seeds and sesame oil.
