Basic information: Patchouli (nilam) is an aromatic herb of the mint family. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producers of patchouli oil, and North Sumatra is a traditional growing region. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dried leaves and has a deep, woody, earthy fragrance that is widely used in perfumery and cosmetics.

Uses and Safety

  • Patchouli oil is used mainly for its fragrance, for example in perfumes, soaps and aroma products.
  • In traditional practice, patchouli is used in Asia for aromatherapy and in traditional preparations. Scientific evidence for health effects is limited, and we make no health claims for patchouli oil.
  • Essential oils are very concentrated. They must always be diluted before use on the skin, can cause skin reactions in sensitive people, and should be kept away from eyes, children and pets. Please do not swallow the oil.
